Current OSU Appointments

Assistant Professor-Clinical, Palliative Medicine

Physician, FGP-Palliative Medicine

Continuing Education, Extension, and Other Courses Taught

Since 2013, I have worked with Vitaltalk, a non-profit organization focused on teaching communication skills to healthcare clinicians in order to nurture healthy relationships with seriously ill patients and their families. I have facilitated over 15 courses nationally in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Colorado. These courses range from half-day to three-day workshops that teach both in-training and currently practicing physicians and advance practices nurses who aim to improve their communication skills through simulated patient experiences. This past year, I was invited to their leadership team as a Senior Associate and facilitate the train-the-trainer workshops nationally as well as help to develop materials for dissemination of the workshops for our graduating learners. My involvement with Vitaltalk has allowed me to offer continuing education in communication skills to practitioners nationally.

Academic Advising

Mentorship is an integral part of teaching and essential to my work as a fellowship Program Director and Clinician Educator. As Program Director, I am responsible for supporting my fellows (4 fellows per year) through their training program as well as coaching them through career planning. I meet with each fellow regularly (scheduled quarterly but usually every other month) to perform job searches, edit cover letters and CVs, practice interviewing skills, etc. Many of my fellows continue their mentoring relationship with me post-graduation for coaching and feedback on future career planning, and development of medical education skills. I have counseled multiple medical students and residents (approximately 7) on choosing specialty/subspecialty pathways, particularly related to identifying future training programs in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and have written numerous letters of recommendation to residency and fellowship programs. Additionally, I have encouraged and collaborated with many subspecialty fellows (approximately 3) in the DOIM on scholarly projects that have culminated in manuscripts and poster presentations (4 for this academic year). Moreover, I developed and co-chair the DOIM Clinician Educator Certificate Program, which includes mentoring subspecialty fellows interested in improving their clinician educator skills and educationally-based scholarly activity.

My distinctive record in mentorship during my tenure at OSUWMC extends beyond trainees to junior faculty both within and outside my Division. I meet quarterly with multiple junior faculty members (approximately 4) to consider career planning and professional growth, development of scholarly activity, navigation of the institutional culture, professionalism with colleagues and leadership, and promotion of self-care. All junior faculty under my mentorship have submitted manuscripts for publication and applied for grant funding within their first 3 years of employment at OSUWMC.
